ASU Pops at the Pavilion: “Get Happy!”

ASU Pavilion

Angelo State University’s Chamber Singers and Vocal Ensemble will perform upbeat pop and jazz standards for the 13th annual Pops at the Pavilion concert on Thursday, April 23, at the ASU Pavilion next to the Plaza Verde residence hall, 1941 S. Van Buren St.

Titled “Get Happy,” the outdoor concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The program will open with “Get Happy,” written in 1930 by Harold Arlen and made popular by Judy Garland in the 1950 movie musical “Summer Stock.” Another of Arlen’s hits, the 1940s’ “Accentuate the Positive,” is on the program, as are show tunes from the 1960s, including “Put on a Happy Face” from “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” “Happiness” from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and “On a Wonderful Day Like Today” from “The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd.” The performance will continue with “A Wink and a Smile” from the 1993 romantic comedy “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from Monty Python’s 2005 Broadway musical “Spamalot,” a parody of the 1960 Lerner & Lowe musical “Camelot.”

Voices Unlimited, a select ensemble of eight community singers, will join the concert this year with jazz favorites by Vince Guaraldi and Sergio Mendes, James Taylor’s ’70s rock ballad “Your Smiling Face” and the award-winning “Up Where We Belong” from the 1982 film “An Officer and a Gentleman.”

ASU’s Chamber Singers and Vocal Ensemble are directed by Dr. Pamela Lee, professor of music and director of choral activities.
