January 09, 2012
Hawkins will receive his third star when he assumes his new position Jan. 11, leaving his current post as deputy director of command, control, communications and computer systems for Joint Staff at the Pentagon. He served as DISA’s vice director from September 2009 to July 2011.
DISA is a U.S. Department of Defense Combat Support Agency that includes 16,000 military personnel, federal civilians and contractor partners. The agency facilitates real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information and provides information and communications support for the U.S. president, vice president, secretary of state, military services and combatant commands.
A 1977 ASU graduate, Hawkins earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in computer science and was a member of the Rams track and field teams that won Lone Star Conference titles in 1974-75 and 1977. He has been an avid supporter of the university’s AFROTC detachment and has achieved the highest military career advancement of any graduate from the program. He was the ASU Alumni Association’s 2001 Distinguished ROTC Alumnus, and returned to ASU in 2005 for a promotion ceremony when he became the first ASU ROTC alumnus to attain the rank of general.
During an Air Force career that has spanned more than three decades, Hawkins has completed assignments with the Strategic Air Command, U.S. Air Force Academy, Air Combat Command, Headquarters Pacific Air Force, Headquarters Air Force and Joint Chiefs of Staff. He holds master’s degrees from Abilene Christian University and the National Defense University, and completed the Air Command and Staff College.
Hawkins will replace Army Lt. Gen. Carroll Pollett as DISA director. Pollett is retiring after 37 years of military service, including the last three at DISA.
