Two-time Grammy Award-nominee Dr. Josh Davies will hold a trumpet master class and perform a recital at Angelo State University on Tuesday, April 3, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Davies will conduct the master class at 3 p.m., and then perform his recital at 7:30 p.m. Both events will be in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and are open free to the public.

The recital will focus on 20th-century music, including works for trumpet and piano by Jacques Casterede, Halsey Stevens, Rodion Schedrin and Joseph Turrin.  Davies will also perform the works of Italian composers Alessandro Marcello and Tomaso Albinoni.  Collaborating with Davies for the recital will be pianist Dr. Tomoko Kashiwagi, a member of the Austin Chamber Music Center faculty.

Davies has recorded more than 20 CDs of jazz, classical, alternative, rock, Latin, Tejano and funk music.  He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.

The Austin educator received his doctorate in musical arts and a Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  He was named co-principal trumpet in the Orquestra Sinfonica de la UANL (Monterrey Symphony Orchestra) in Monterrey, Mexico, for the 2009-10 season, has been principal trumpet in the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra for four seasons, and performs with the Brazos Valley, Victoria, Temple, Abilene and Austin symphony orchestras.

Davies’ teaching experience includes serving as an adjunct professor of trumpet and jazz at Concordia University-Texas in Austin where his duties included private brass lessons, music theory and conducting the university’s Jazz Ensemble.  He now lectures in trumpet at Texas State University-San Marcos, serves on the faculty of the Concordia Music Academy and the Austin Chamber Music Center, and is a board member of the Austin Chamber Ensemble and the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra.
