ASU to Present Faculty Excellence Awards

Outstanding faculty in each of Angelo State University’s four academic colleges will be honored at the third annual Faculty Recognition Dinner on Tuesday, May 1, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

During the dinner, ASU President Joseph C. Rallo will present the President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence in the categories of Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor and Excellence in Leadership/Service. 

Twenty-eight faculty nominees from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Health and Human Services will be recognized with certificates.  Five semifinalists in each category will receive a $500 award.  The overall winner in each category will receive $2,500 as well as a Signature Presidential Recognition Award.  The overall winners in the Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor categories will be ASU’s nominees for the Texas Tech University System Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research. 

This year’s nominees from the College of Arts and Sciences, by category, are Bonnie B. Amos, professor of biology, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Dionne T. Bailey, associate professor of mathematics, Excellence in Teaching; Timothy Bonenfant, associate professor of music, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Michael T. Dixon, assistant professor of biology, Excellence in Teaching; Amaris R. Guardiola, assistant professor of biology, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Laurence F. Jones, professor of political science and head of the Political Science and Philosophy Department, Excellence in Leadership/Service; John E. Klingemann, assistant professor of history, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Leah B. Mangrum, assistant professor of communication, Excellence in Leadership/Service; George Pacheco Jr., assistant professor of communication, Excellence in Teaching; Robin M. Runia, assistant professor of English, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Mark S. Sonntag, professor of physics, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Ned E. Strenth, professor of biology, Excellence in Teaching; Shawn T. Wahl, professor of communication and head of the Communication, Mass Media and Theatre Department, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Andrew B. Wallace, dean of academic excellence, Excellence in Leadership/Service; James W. Ward, assistant professor of geology, Excellence in Teaching; Scott C. Williams, assistant professor of physics, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; and James J. Womack, assistant professor of music, Excellence in Teaching. 

Nominated from the College of Business are Tom F. Badgett, professor of marketing and head of the Management and Marketing Department, Excellence in Teaching; Sudhir K. Chawla, professor of marketing, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; and Detelin S. Elenkov, professor of management, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor. 

Nominees from the College of Education are Marilyn J. Eisenwine, professor of teacher education, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Donna B. Gee, associate professor of teacher education, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Christine L. Purkiss, assistant professor of teacher education, Excellence in Teaching; and Amy M. Williamson, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor. 

College of Health and Human Services nominees are Lynne C. Hughes, assistant clinical professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Mansoo Ko, assistant professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Carolyn R. Mason, associate professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Teaching; and Sangeeta Singg, professor of psychology, Excellence in Leadership/Service. 

The purpose of the President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence is to recognize outstanding faculty nominated by their faculty peers in each of ASU’s four academic colleges for excellence in the three major areas of faculty performance.  The awards are presented annually toward the end of each spring semester.  All faculty members who have completed at least one full academic year at ASU with satisfactory evaluation are eligible for nomination.
