Owner/manger : Therran and Steve Johnson
Nature of Business
City : San Angelo, Texas
SBDC Business Adviser : Paul Howard
Steve retired from Verizon after being employed for over 20 years. He bought a couple of houses to lease. He also worked for a company who had the contract to maintain washers and dryers in base housing at Goodfellow Air Force Base. His wife Therran helps him with both of these endeavors and together they decided they wanted more.
Steve and Therran decided they wanted to form a business and attempt to obtain the bid on this contract themselves. They were not sure how to begin the process so they came to the Angelo State University • Small Business Development Center and met with Advisor Paul Howard.
Paul suggested they begin working on a business plan and to attend seminars put on by the SBDC. The Johnson’s quickly immersed themselves in attending and signed up for the Small Business Management Certificate Program. By doing so it helped them understand how to start and operate a small business.
Paul assisted the Johnson’s in getting on the CCR and ORCA to possibly obtain federal contracts. Therran says, “The Small Business Development Center helped our business come to life. They helped us reach our goals.”
The local economy has now been boosted by a new business that created two jobs. Johnson Services can now compete with larger, out of town companies by being on the CCR and being able to provide those services to GAFB.
