ASU to Present Annual President’s Faculty Excellence Awards

Outstanding faculty in each of Angelo State University’s five academic colleges will be honored at the second annual Faculty Recognition Dinner on Tuesday, April 26, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

During the dinner, ASU President Joseph C. Rallo will present the President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence in the categories of Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor and Excellence in Leadership/Service.

Twenty-six faculty nominees from the Colleges of Business, Education, Liberal and Fine Arts, Nursing and Allied Health, and Sciences will be recognized with certificates. One winner in each category from each college will receive a $500 award. The overall winner in each category will receive $2,500 as well as a Signature Presidential Recognition Award. The overall winners in the Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor categories will be ASU’s nominees for the Texas Tech University System Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research.

This year’s nominees from the College of Business, by category, are Sudhir K. Chawla, professor of marketing, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; S. Murat Kara, associate professor of economics, Excellence in Teaching; and Jamal G. Husein, associate professor of economics, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor.

Nominees from the College of Education are Kimberly K. Livengood, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, Excellence in Teaching; and Alaric A. Williams, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, Excellence in Leadership/Service.

Nominated from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts are Erin Ashworth-King, assistant professor of English, Excellence in Leadership/Service and Excellence in Teaching; Mark L. Hama, associate professor of English, Excellence in Teaching; Won-Jae Lee, associate professor of criminal justice, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Leah B. Mangrum, assistant professor of communication, Excellence in Teaching; Veronica S. Ostertag, assistant professor of German, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Robin M. Runia, assistant professor of English, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Jeffrey B. Schonberg, associate professor of English, Excellence in Leadership/Service; June H. Smith, professor of communication, Excellence in Leadership/Service; and Shawn T. Wahl, head of the Communication, Mass Media and Theatre Department, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor.

College of Nursing and Allied Health nominees are Harriet K. Lewis, assistant clinical professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Leadership/Service; and R. Kelly Michael, assistant clinical professor of nursing, Excellence in Teaching.

Nominees from the College of Sciences are Michael T. Dixon, assistant professor of biology, Excellence in Teaching; Robert C. Dowler, professor of biology, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Karl J. Havlak, associate professor of mathematics, Excellence in Teaching; John J. Osterhout, head of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Joseph I. Satterfield, associate professor of geology, Excellence in Teaching; Toni D. Sauncy, associate professor of physics, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Cody B. Scott, professor of animal science, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; John C. “Trey” Smith, associate professor of mathematics, Excellence in Leadership/Service; and Mark Sonntag, professor of physics, Excellence in Leadership/Service.

The purpose of the President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence is to recognize outstanding faculty nominated by their faculty peers in each of ASU’s five academic colleges for excellence in the three major areas of faculty performance. The awards are presented annually toward the end of each spring semester. All faculty members who have completed at least one full academic year at ASU with satisfactory evaluation are eligible for nomination.
