Honors Program Reinstated at ASU, Future to be Examined

May 13, 2011

Angelo State University President Joseph C. Rallo reported to the Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System Friday that the decision to close the ASU Honors Program will be reconsidered, and he will return to the board in August with a recommendation for the program’s future.

In reporting to the board, Dr. Rallo said, “A strong honors experience at ASU remains an important aspect of our academic strategic planning process. Recently, I have been approached by several individuals who have expressed keen interest in helping to support and sustain an honors experience at the university. Because of their interest and my intent to prepare a recommendation for our board of regents, it is clear that the decision to terminate the current Honors Program must be revisited.

“As such, the decision to terminate the program is rescinded to allow time for my review of the program and the preparation of a recommendation to the board of regents,” he said. “The Honors Program, including its curriculum, scholarships, staffing and physical location, will be immediately reinstated.”

ASU’s Honors Program was established in 2002. During the 2010-11 academic year, 130 students were enrolled in the program.
