ASU Hosting Disability Awareness Event

October 17, 2012

Angelo State University’s Multicultural Center will host a Disability Awareness Celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive on the ASU campus.

Titled “Living Without Limits,” the celebration will commemorate October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month by paying tribute to the accomplishments of people with disabilities and reaffirming ASU’s commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens.

Activities will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main lobby of the University Center, and will include food prepared using recipes by blind chef Christine Ha, who in September won the Fox TV reality show “Master Chef.”  The presentation will also feature instructional video clips of Ha preparing her signature dishes.

Stations will also be set up in the University Center for participants to experience simulations of immobility, hearing impairment and loss of sight.  The West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, Disability Connections Resource Center and the Department of Assistive Rehabilitation Services will also have stations set up with information about their organizations and various disabilities.
