Angelo State University intramural flag football team IM Legends won its second national title in a week at the 2012 National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) Flag Football National Championships held Jan. 4-6 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Competing in the co-rec division, IM Legends defeated a Central Florida team, 18-9, in the championship game.  The ASU team advanced to the final by beating a Valdosta State team, 53-27, in the semifinals following a 64-9 quarterfinal victory over a team from Western Carolina.  In earlier pool play, IM Legends defeated a Florida Gulf Coast team, 43-10, and beat a Mississippi State team, 55-28.

IM Legends began the week by winning the American Collegiate Intramural Sports (ACIS) National Championship on Dec. 31, and then won the NCCS tournament, improving on last year’s runner-up finish.

Also at the NCCS tournament, ASU’s Wolfpac was the men’s division runner-up, falling to a team from the University of Nebraska, 27-14, in the championship game.  In the semis, Wolfpac defeated a Kennesaw State team, 34-26, and scored a quarterfinals shutout of a Southeastern Louisiana team, 32-0.  In a championship bracket opening round game, Wolfpac defeated a Columbus State team, 34-12, following earlier pool-play wins over a Northern Iowa team, 46-6, and a Southeastern Louisiana team, 30-26.

ASU’s entry in the women’s division, Vixen, also finished as runner-up after falling to a Florida A&M team, 27-0, in the championship game.  To reach the final, Vixen won a semifinal game over Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, 13-7, shut out a Georgia Southern team, 34-0, in the quarterfinals, and won a championship bracket game over an Augustana College team, 41-0.  In pool play, Vixen defeated a Campbell University team, 31-6, and a Central Florida team, 28-6.

ASU players named NCCS All-Americans were Wolfpac’s Reid Jackson and Trevor Brunet in the men’s division, Vixen’s Danielle Walts and Jetton Fontenot in the women’s division, and IM Legends’ Noel Johnson and Brunet in the co-rec division.  Jackson and Walts, also playing for IM Legends, were named the co-rec division’s male and female MVPs, respectively.
