ASU Club Café to Feature Higher Profile Entertainers

August 17, 2010

Angelo State University’s Club Café coffeehouse entertainment series will undergo some changes beginning this fall in an effort to provide even higher-quality entertainment for the campus community and the public, said Sam Mendoza, graduate assistant for student programs and activities in the ASU Center for Student Involvement.

Instead of hosting one big-name band in concert, the University Center Program Council (UCPC) will concentrate on bringing in higher profile comedians, such as Rob Schneider and Jamie Kennedy, for the monthly Club Café.

Mendoza said that after last year’s Maroon 5 concert didn’t pull the numbers the UCPC was hoping for, they realized that comedians are more popular with students in the Club Café venue.

“We’ve noticed the concerts here have averaged around 3,000,” Mendoza said, “but no matter how much money we spent, it would stay around the same amount of attendance. The money isn’t the issue because we don’t try to make money off any event, but now we are in the Texas Tech system, they look at it and wonder why there is such a difference between how much we make and how much we spend.”

Schneider will open the Club Café series on Aug. 25, during the first week of classes, and Kennedy is booked for Sept. 23. Negotiations are ongoing for additional comedians in October and November.

“We still try to provide students with the best quality of programming we can,” Mendoza said, “but when we book entertainers like Rob Schneider, we can’t charge students the $1 we used to, so we decided to raise it to $2. The general public always paid what the students did, but when you pay a little bit more for quality, you have to raise the admission a little bit. The general public has been bumped up to $5, which is not bad to see these performers.”

Mendoza said the UCPC will also sell tickets in advance to students, and free coffee mugs will be given away to the first 100 people at each event.
