ASU Wool Judging Team Wins in San Antonio

Angelo State University’s Wool Judging Teams placed first and third at the 2013 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Collegiate Wool Contest on Feb. 9 in San Antonio.

ASU’s Gold Team earned 2,251 points to take first place ahead of nine other teams, all from Division I universities.  Texas Tech University’s Red Team placed second with 2,234 points, and ASU’s Blue Team placed third with 2,227 points.  Texas Tech’s White Team and Black Team placed fourth and fifth, respectively.  Other universities represented at the contest were Texas A&M University, New Mexico State University and Kansas State University.

Individually for ASU, Katie Austin placed second overall with 756 points, just three points behind the winner, Colton Fritz of Texas Tech.  Also finishing in the top 10 for ASU were Tait Cooper in third, Kelsie Schmidt in fifth, Kyle Burris in sixth and Bryce Patton in seventh place.

Other ASU team members include Cheyenne Bone, Barret Rambie, Morgan Richards, Orrin Vinson and Whitney Wardlaw.  Coaches are graduate students Craig Leonard and Sharla Schmidt.

The Wool Judging Team is sponsored by the ASU Agriculture Department.  It will wrap up its spring season at the National Championship Contest in March at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
