ASU International Studies’ Second Annual Food Drive

September 28, 2010

As a lead-up to World Food Day on Oct. 16, Angelo State University’s Center for International Studies (CIS) is conducting its second annual October food drive to benefit the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank.

Members of the ASU campus community and the public are invited to donate canned goods and other non-perishable food items from now through Oct. 16. Food gifts can be dropped off from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the CIS offices in the ASU Annex, 1825 S. Johnson St.

The annual food drive is part of an ongoing effort by the CIS to help create a learning environment at ASU where intellectual discovery and social responsibility converge in pursuit of a sustainable world.

“The Center for International Studies aims to integrate sustainability efforts, such as the War on Hunger, as an important component to our study abroad programs,” said Dr. Christine Muelsch, study abroad coordinator. “Recognizing hunger at home and abroad is a first step in improving the well-being of present and future generations.”

In August of 2009, ASU joined Universities Fighting World Hunger, an initiative spearheaded by Auburn University, whose members work in close collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme. All students participating in ASU study abroad programs are required to work five hours of community service prior to departure and/or fulfill a five-hour service component during their trip.
