ASU Meats Team Places in Houston

Angelo State University’s Meat Judging Team brought home several team and individual honors from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest earlier this month.

(L-R) Derrick Thivierge, Sondra Lohse, Ty Crooks, Clayton Meyerhoff, Carly Bristow, Clay Kelly, Troy Tarpley Competing against 16 teams from 10 universities, the ASU team placed in the top 10 in five separate categories, including first place in Pork Judging, fourth place in both Reasons and Specifications, eighth in Beef Grading and 10th in Lamb Judging.  Overall, ASU placed eighth with 4,016 points, just 27 points out of the top five.

The other teams at the contest represented Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, Kansas State University, Colorado State University, University of Wyoming, Fresno State University, University of Nebraska, University of Florida and West Texas A&M University.  Texas Tech teams finished first and second.

Individually for ASU, Carly Bristow took first place in Pork Judging and Reasons, Derrick Thivierge finished sixth in Pork Judging, Clay Kelley finished ninth in Reasons, and Ty Crooks finished 10th in Specifications.

Other members of the ASU Meat Judging Team are Sondra Lohse and Clayton Meyerhoff.  The team is coached by graduate student Troy Tarpley and Michael Boenig, a research assistant in the ASU Agriculture Department.

The Houston contest marked the end of the spring meat judging season.  Next up for the ASU team is the Eastern National Contest on Oct. 5 at Cargill Regional Beef in Wyalusing, Pa.
