ASU Hosting SAMFA Art/Science Family Day

April 08, 2013

Angelo State University chemistry students and faculty will host an Art and Science Family Day on Saturday, April 13, at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA), 1 Love St. near downtown San Angelo.

The event will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and is open free to the public.  It is designed to show attendees the connections between art and science in a fun family setting.  Activities will include art and science experiments led by ASU chemistry students, art activities in the SAMFA Education Studio and a chemistry magic show at 1 p.m.  Free snacks will also be provided.

Experiments will include tie dying with natural pigments, projecting colors with a home-made spectrometer and extracting pigment from red beetles.

ASU students coordinating the activities are from the Using Chemical Literature class taught by Dr. Edith Osborne.  Faculty from ASU’s art, biology, physics and teacher education departments also participated in production of the event, as well as staff from the university’s Hispanic Serving Institution STEM Grant Project.
