ASU Ensembles to Present Concert

Angelo State University’s newly formed Chamber Strings Ensemble will join the Double Reed Ensemble and the Woodwind Quintet for a joint spring concert on Thursday, April 25, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is open free to the public.

The strings program will include “Symphony for Strings No. 1” by Jeffrey Bishop, “The Journey” by William Hofeldt, “O Mio Babbino Caro” by Giocomo Puccini, Kirt Mosier’s “The Dance of Iscariot” and Aram Khatchaturian’s “Sabre Dance.”  This performance marks the first public concert by an ASU string ensemble in more than 30 years.

Double reed selections will include “Le Revue des Muppet” by Henson/Pottle; “Four Marches from the American Revolution,” which includes “Colonel Orne’s March,” “United States March,” “General Washington’s March” and “General Wayne’s March;” and “Fugue on a Theme by Lady Gaga” by Giovanni Dettort.

The Woodwind Quintet will perform several movements from “La Cheminée du Roi René” by Darius Milhaud, including “Cortège,” “Aubade,” “Jongleurs,” “La Maousinglade,” “Joutes sur L’arc” and “Madrigal-Nocture.”

The Chamber Strings Ensemble is directed by Dr. Maurice Kelley, visiting assistant professor of music.  The Double Reed Ensemble and Woodwind Quintet are directed by Dr. Jeff Womack, associate professor of music.
