October 01, 2013

University Theatre at Angelo State University will continue its 2013-14 season with the historical drama “The Lion in Winter,” beginning Friday, Oct. 11, in the ASU Auditorium.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 11-12 and 18-19, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.  Tickets are $8 for the general public, $4 for non-ASU students and $3 for ASU students.  Admission is free for Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU activity card holders.  The ASU Auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. The third production of the Arts at ASU theatre season, “The Lion in Winter” is a Tony Award-winning imaging of the family and political conflicts at a fictional Christmas gathering with Henry II of England, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, their adult sons, Richard, Geoffrey and John, King Philip of France and Philip’s half-sister, Alais, who is Richard’s betrothed and Henry’s mistress.  Henry has released his wife from 10 years of imprisonment to attend the Christmas court, but their disputes remain unsettled.  Henry favors their youngest son, John, as the next king and Eleanor favors their eldest son, Richard, while middle son Geoffrey hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top.  At stake is the crown of England.

Written by James Goldman, “The Lion in Winter” debuted on Broadway in 1966.  Goldman won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 1968 movie version, which starred Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn.  The ASU production is directed by Dr. William Doll, professor of theatre and director of University Theatre.

The student cast includes Larry Hettick as King Henry II, Magdalena Hogan as the French Princess Alais, Joey Hancock as Prince John, Tyler Tennell as Prince Geoffrey, Tyler Hastings as Prince Richard, Janae Hatchett as Queen Eleanor and Jacob Scott as King Philip of France.  Standbys are Collyn Glaspie, Tessa Handlin, Cameron O’Briant, Tom Zimmerman, Mason Gable and Chloé Casey.
