ASU Communication Prof Nominated for Statewide Award

October 10, 2011

Dr. George Pacheco Jr., an assistant professor of communication at Angelo State University, has been nominated for the Texas Speech Communication Association’s (TSCA) statewide University Educator of the Year Award.

All the nominees will be honored and the winner of this year’s award will be announced at the TSCA Convention Oct. 13-16 in Irving.

An ASU faculty member since 2007, Pacheco teaches classes in intercultural, small group and nonverbal communication, as well as public speaking and rhetoric of humor. His research interests include first-generation college students, critical-cultural communication, Hispanic/Latino communication and rhetorical/qualitative methodologies.

In a letter of support to the TSCA Educator of the Year Committee, Dr. Shawn Wahl, head of the ASU Communication, Mass Media and Theatre Department, commended Pacheco for his skill in the classroom as well as his passion for publishing articles about innovations in teaching.

“One of the many positive attributes of Dr. Pacheco’s teaching is that he writes about it as scholarship, and has made a vast contribution to knowledge in the areas of rhetoric and culture,” Wahl wrote. “When a teacher like Dr. Pacheco integrates scholarship into the classroom, it should stand as a clear indicator of excellence, and warrant recognition.”

Wahl also commended Pacheco for his focus on students and his ability to motivate them to stay in college in the face of adversity, as well as his reputation as a campus leader and “go-to” person for both faculty and students.

Pacheco holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Texas A&M University and a doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.
