Ireton Appointed Director of Athletic Communications for ASU

October 10, 2011

Brandon Ireton, a West Texas native who has served the last two years as assistant director of athletic communications at Texas Tech University, has been named director of athletic communications at Angelo State University.

ASU Communications and Marketing Director Preston Lewis and Athletic Director Kathleen Brasfield jointly announced the appointment, effective Wednesday, Oct. 12. Ireton succeeds Kevin McCarty, who resigned in the summer to become interactive web developer for the University of Kansas.

As director of athletic communications, Ireton will oversee the coverage and promotion of Angelo State’s 13 men’s and women’s sports, including media relations, game management, statistical reporting and web coverage through www.angelosports.com and social media.

“With his broad experience both at Division I and at a smaller university,” Lewis said, “Brandon will help us strengthen the expanded concept of athletic communications that we have implemented over the past 18 months to better serve not only our athletes and coaches but also our fans.”

Brasfield said, “Brandon understands the importance of social media in our recruiting process and as a way to involve our fans. Creating opportunities for fans to interact with student-athletes and coaches is critical to marketing and promotions. Giving potential Rams and ’Belles insights into ASU and our athletic programs via the web and other social media increases the visibility of ASU in the recruiting process. We are excited for him to continue the concepts of the Athletic Communications Office as the link between the Athletic Department, the university and all our constituent groups.”

In addition to welcoming Ireton to ASU’s athletic communications staff, both Brasfield and Lewis offered their thanks and acknowledgement to Rebekah “Becky” Brackin, Angelo State’s director of community relations who provided day-to-day administrative oversight to the office during the position search, and to graduate assistants Tommy Shield, Troy Sayles and Wes Bloomquist, who carried the bulk of the daily operations and game management.

“We applaud the commitment and dedication of Becky, Tommy, Troy and Wes to Rams and Rambelles athletics over the last few months,” Lewis said. “They all did extraordinary work in pitching in to provide the coverage ASU fans have come to expect over the last 18 months.”

Brasfield added, “Tommy, Troy and Wes have created a team approach to continuing to tell the story of ASU student-athletes, teams and coaches. Their unselfish commitment is refreshing. Becky Brackin has provided insight, direction and stability for all of us. We appreciate all of them and recognize that their contributions remain invaluable.”

New ASU appointee Ireton worked two years at Texas Tech as a graduate assistant before being promoted to assistant director of athletics communications for football, cross country and track and field. He also has been the primary media relations contact for women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and women’s golf. Additionally, he served as the Texas Tech Athletic Department’s supervisor for student interns.

Prior to beginning his tenure at Texas Tech, Ireton worked in the Sports Information Office at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, assisting the director in daily operations and game-day preparation and coverage while he worked on his bachelor’s degree with a dual major in communication studies and public relations. He also earned a Master of Science in exercise and sports science with a concentration in sports management from Texas Tech University.

In addition to his collegiate sports promotion experience, Ireton also worked a summer doing customer relations and game support for the Midland Rockhounds minor league baseball team. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Ireton is a native of Stanton, where he graduated from high school.
