ASU Planetarium Winter Schedule

January 15, 2014

Angelo State University’s Global Immersion Center (GIC), formerly the Planetarium, will present two full-dome public astronomy shows during its winter 2014 schedule beginning Thursday, Jan. 23, in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building, 2333 Vanderventer St.

Each Thursday from Jan. 23 to March 6, “Super Volcanoes” will run at 7 p.m. and “Two Small Pieces of Glass” will run at 8 p.m.  All the shows are open to the public and there is no admission charge for “Super Volcanoes.” Admission prices for “Two Small Pieces of Glass” are $3 for adults and $2 for children, active military and senior citizens.  ASU students, faculty and staff are admitted free to both shows.

“Super Volcanoes” is an immersive planetarium show that looks back at rare classes of eruptions that have marshaled the energy that lurks, like a sleeping dragon, beneath the surface of the planet Earth.  The program also moves beyond Earth to explore the impact of giant volcanic eruptions around our solar system.  Audiences will “fly” down to Neptune’s frigid moon, Triton, and on to the ultimate volcanic world: Jupiter’s moon, Io.  On a visit to a legendary North American hot spot, Yellowstone National Park, the show explores whether a super volcano can erupt in our time.  The show is sponsored by ASU’s Hispanic Serving Institution-Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (HSI-STEM) grant.

In “Two Small Pieces of Glass,” audiences will learn how the telescope has helped us to understand our place in space and continue to expand our understanding of the universe.  They will also be enlightened on the history of the telescope and the discoveries it has inspired, as well as learn how telescopes work and how the largest observatories in the world use them to explore the mysteries of the universe.
