‘Bella’ Debuts as ASU Women’s Sports Mascot
October 20, 2010
“Bella,” a costumed Rambouillet ewe, debuted during ASU’s Midnight Madness basketball program on Oct. 15 when the 2010-11 Rams and Rambelles squads were introduced. Delta Zeta sorority sponsors Bella.
“Delta Zeta told us that one of its members, who had been a mascot, was interested and the sorority wanted to be in charge of it,” said Nolen Mears, executive director of Student Life. “The representatives first met with the Athletic Department and ASU President Dr. Rallo concerning the idea and obtained their approval. Then I met with them and we secured funding for the costume through the Student Service Fee budget and proceeded with the design of the costume.”
Bella’s costume was manufactured by the same company that made the Roscoe suit. She is considered part of the ASU spirit team, along with Roscoe and the ASU cheerleaders. All spirit team members are part of the Student Life program.
Appearing primarily at women’s athletic events, Bella will also be making community appearances representing ASU alone and with Roscoe. Roscoe also comes from the campus Greek community as a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Like Roscoe, the student portraying Bella is kept confidential so that the character is in the spotlight, rather than the student.
