Baby’s First Close Up

January 28, 2014

As a sonogram technician, Amber Young gets to interact with women during a time that for most can be most rewarding – pregnancy.  Some people love the unknown; others cannot stand it, especially when it comes to their unborn child.  Part of Amber’s job is to do ultrasound scans as requested by physicians to determine the presence of any prenatal anomalies or abnormalities.  A secondary purpose can be to determine the baby’s gender.

With advances in ultrasound technology, it is possible to render viewings that are three dimensional and very crisp and clear.  With that, Amber spotted an opportunity.  She saw parents and family members that would pay out of their own pockets for the opportunity to learn their baby’s gender and get multiple prints and a recording of the heartbeat.

Amber contacted the Angelo State University – Small Business Development Center for advice about setting up her business.  She was assigned to work with Business Development Specialist, James Leavelle.  James worked with Amber on her business plan, the legalities of starting her business, and aided her in getting the financing for her business.

Amber had this to say, “James has helped me tremendously with the business plan and projections and having everything ready to present to the bank.  When I first came to the SBDC, I did not know where to begin and James has always helped in any obstacles or questions I have had.”

Since opening her sonogram business, Amber has added a new product line – belly casting.  The product offers women a decorative keepsake of the time the baby was in their womb.  As excitement builds around her offerings, her business is growing. Amber started her business, creating five jobs.
