Honors Students to AF Assembly

January 31, 2014

Two students in Angelo State University’s Honors Program have been selected to attend the 55th Air Force Academy Assembly Feb. 3-6 on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Junior biology major Aimee Denham of Bandera and junior history major Duncan Knox of Ozona will represent ASU at the assembly.  This year’s topic, “U.S.-India Relations: Partners in Democracy,” will examine the implications of India’s rapid rise to economic power and its potential effects on U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century.  The student delegates will hear distinguished speakers and participate in roundtable discussion groups led by senior scholars and government officials.

This year’s keynote speaker is The Honorable Vikram J. Singh, deputy assistant secretary of defense for South and Southeast Asia.  Other featured speakers will include Brig. Gen. Andrew P. Armacost, dean of faculty at the Air Force Academy; S. Paul Kapur, professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School; and David Bargueño, foreign affairs officer in the U.S. State Department’s Office of Global Food Security.

Attendance at the assembly for Denham and Knox is being funded by ASU’s Alvin and Patricia New Honors Program Enhancement Fund, which was created in 2008 through an initial $250,000 donation to the ASU Honors Program by former San Angelo Mayor Alvin New and his wife, Patricia, who are both ASU alumni.

Convened annually since 1959, the Air Force Academy Assembly is co-sponsored by Columbia University’s American Assembly.  Its purpose is to provide an outstanding group of college students with better understanding of major national issues.
