ASU Veteran’s Day Flag Retreat and Candlelight Vigil

November 05, 2010

Angelo State University’s Air Force ROTC detachment will recognize Veteran’s Day and honor the nation’s military veterans with a flag retreat ceremony and candlelight vigil Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove.

Activities will begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 with the flag retreat ceremony at the flagpole, then move to the Memorial Oak Grove for the candlelight vigil. Opening remarks for the vigil will be made by ASU cadet Angelie Wanner and ROTC commander Col. Mike Buck. This year’s special guest speaker will be Finley K. Brown, a nephew of former San Angelo College student Finley K. Steele, who died in World War II and is memorialized in the Oak Grove. Following Brown’s remarks, ROTC cadets will begin reading biographies of ASU alumni veterans.

After the first reading, attendees will be invited to the Mayer Administration Building for a reception provided by the ASU West Texas Collection and the Friends of the (ASU) Porter Henderson Library.

The candlelight vigil will run until midnight and will include a changing of the guard every 30 minutes along with the readings about ASU veterans. At the end of each reading, a single flower will be placed on the marker in the Memorial Oak Grove. The guards will be performing the same ritual as those guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The evening’s activities are open free to the public and are being sponsored by the Robert G. Carr Squadron of the Arnold Air Society and ASU’s AFROTC Detachment 847. The ASU flagpole and Memorial Oak Grove are located in front of the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave N.
