ASU Arnold Air Society Named Top Area Squadron

December 01, 2010

Angelo State University’s Robert G. Carr Squadron of the Arnold Air Society (AAS) was named the Outstanding Arnold Air Squadron in Area IX at the recent Area IX Conclave hosted by the ASU group in San Antonio.

This marks the second straight year the ASU group has won the Outstanding Squadron award. AAS is the professional honorary service society for Air Force ROTC cadets. Area IX is made up of ROTC detachments at 14 universities in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, including ASU, Texas Tech University, University of Texas, Baylor University, Texas A&M University, University of Oklahoma, Louisiana State University and University of Arkansas.

Angelo State’s AAS squadron hosted the area conclave with 24 of its members in attendance. Co-host for the event was ASU’s Carr Chapter of Silver Wings, a national non-military community service organization associated with AAS. The guest speaker was retired Brig. Gen. Richard Bundy, executive director of the Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings.

During 2010, ASU Arnold Air Society members completed 480 hours of community service assisting local organizations, including the Girl Scouts of America and Children’s Miracle Network. They also performed ASU’s annual Veteran’s Day Vigil and competed in the Goodfellow Air Force Base Chili Cook-Off, placing second in the “Anything Goes” category.
