ASU to Host Trumpet Ensembles

March 21, 2014

The Angelo State University Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present a concert featuring trumpet solo and ensemble performances on Sunday, April 6, in the ASU Auditorium.

The concert will begin at 2 p.m. and is open free to the public.  The ASU Auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N.

A highlight of the program will be the Texas premiere of Erik Morales’ “Concerto for 2 Trumpets” performed by Dr. John Irish, ASU professor of music, and Dr. Mark Wilcox, associate professor of music at McMurry University in Abilene.  Morales is a Louisiana-based composer and arranger.  Irish and Wilcox were part of the 24-member consortium that helped in commissioning his latest piece, which received its world premiere last June.

The ASU Trumpet Ensemble will also perform under the direction of Irish, as well as trumpet ensembles from Abilene Christian University and McMurray, and an ensemble comprising 14 local high school trumpeters.  An ASU Alumni Ensemble of Irish’s former students will perform Eric Ewazen’s “Concert Fanfare.”

Other pieces will range from music composed in the 16th century to cutting-edge sounds of the 21st century.  The concert finale, an arrangement including the hymn “Amazing Grace” and “Triumphal March” from Verdi’s opera “Aida,” will be performed by the massed trumpet participants.
