April 07, 2014

Angelo State University’s Department of History and Multicultural Center will co-host a presentation and discussion on local civil rights and school integration on Monday, April 14, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Titled “San Angelo and Civil Rights: Local Stories of Integration in San Angelo Schools,” the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. April 14 in Room 110/111 of the University Center and is open free to the public.  Featured speakers will be Phil George, former ASU coach and athletic director who participated in the integration of ASU; and Mary Frances Owens, a retired teacher who was involved in the integration of the San Angelo Independent School District.

Topics to be covered include integrating the SAISD and integrating ASU, particularly through the Athletics Department and Rams football team.  Following their presentations, George and Owens will participate in a discussion and question-and-answer session with the audience moderated by Dr. Christine Lamberson, ASU assistant professor of history.
