ASU Meat Judging Team Has Solid Showing in Fort Worth

Competing against 11 other teams, the ASU team finisheded third in Placings, Beef Judging and Overall Beef Judging; fourth in Beef Grading and Lamb Judging; fifth in Pork Judging; and sixth in Reasons, while finishing eighth overall. Individual honors went to Devin Absher for second place in Placings and fourth in Lamb Judging, and Clinton Bippert, who tied for fifth in Beef Judging.
“The 2011 ASU meats team has put in countless hours of hard work, and to see that dedication come to fruition has amplified their drive for continued success for the remainder of the season,” said Jennie Canon, team coach and graduate assistant in the ASU Agriculture Department. “The students really analyzed the classes consistently and were able to grade well, resulting in standings in the top five in all but one category. I am proud that the team has represented ASU in a positive light and shows promise to do so in the future.”
Also at the Fort Worth competition were teams from Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University, Colorado State University, University of Wyoming, University of South Dakota, West Texas A&M University, Kansas State University and California State at Fresno.
ASU team members hale from Slaton, Wall, Cherokee and the San Antonio area. They are Kara Andrews, Michael Schwartz, Travis Shannon, Bippert and Absher.
“This is a very special group of highly motivated kids, who are fueled by passion and desire to cement the ASU Meat Judging Program in its rightful place among the top schools in the nation,” said Gered Smith, graduate assistant and assistant coach. “They also want to underline that not only our meats program, but our Ag Department and the university as a whole, are the premier places to be.”
