Four ASU Staff Members Honored with Staff Excellence Awards

February 16, 2010

Four staff members have been named recipients of Staff Excellence Awards for their job performance at Angelo State University during the 2009 calendar year.

They are Aaron Carrillo, printer, Print Shop; Patricia Payne, construction project coordinator, Facilities Planning and Construction; Bradley Petty, director, University Recreation and Intramurals; and Bree Walker, graphic artist, Communications and Marketing.

The Staff Excellence Awards are given each spring semester in recognition of outstanding job performance during the preceding calendar year. The awards recognize non-teaching staff members whose job performance exceeds the customary standards or who exhibit outstanding skills or dedication while performing special projects. Each of the four recipients received a $650 honorarium.

Honorees were selected by a committee of the ASU Staff Senate from 31 staff members nominated by their fellow employees for outstanding overall job performance or outstanding performance on a special project.

An ASU employee since 2000, Carrillo helps plan, organize and engage in the operation of the Print Shop’s offset presses, document reproduction and bindery. He was lauded for taking the lead during the fall in mastering and bringing online ASU’s new four-color printing press, including extensive training after normal office hours. His efforts have resulted in faster turnaround and greater quality control of the university’s color publications.

Payne, who joined the ASU staff in 2005, was honored for her overall exemplary performance and her continuing excellence in serving the multiple needs of the Facilities Planning and Construction Department. She was commended for her willingness to work extra hours and at home inputting data into the department’s new software system during a time of heavy workload resulting from multiple construction projects.

A member of the ASU staff since 2000, Petty oversees all aspects of University Recreation and Intramurals, including budget, staffing and the Center for Human Performance (CHP). He was lauded for the continuing growth in student participation in intramurals, ongoing improvements to the CHP and providing opportunities for students and graduate assistants to gain valuable work experience. In 2009, he was also the Texas State Director for the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association.

An ASU staff member since 2008, Walker was honored for her work on the re-design and enhancement project for the ASU Web site. During 2009, she developed new designs for the ASU home page and upgraded recruiting pages for the offices of Admissions, Financial Aid and Residential Programs that resulted in a 20-40 percent increase in average Web hits and have become the model for the Texas Tech University System. She also completed on deadline a design enhancement of all the academic department Web sites while maintaining her normal duties.

The four honorees and their 27 fellow nominees were recognized during a university-wide ceremony and reception on Tuesday.
