ASU Theatre to Present Comedy

June 17, 2014

University Theatre at Angelo State University will open its 2014-2015 season with the world premiere of “The Channeler,” a comedy by Dr. Trey Smith of the ASU mathematics faculty, beginning Thursday, June 26, in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Show times for the dinner theatre production will be at 8 p.m. June 26-28 and July 3-5, with dinner to be served at 6:45 p.m. A matinee performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, with lunch served at 12:45 p.m.

Tickets are $12.50 for ASU students and ASU activity card holders, $15 for non-ASU students and Arts at ASU subscribers, and $20 general admission. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The first of two Arts at ASU summer dinner theatre productions, “The Channeler” features Horace, a man who has no control over who he becomes or what he does. Although his ability is of constant benefit to others, he struggles with his own lack of identity. Is there a place in the world for a totally selfless person? Maybe.

The playwright, Smith, is an ASU alumnus and associate professor of mathematics. ASU University Theatre previously featured his earlier works titled “Uncommon Threads” in 2005 and “Original One-Act Plays” in 2007.

“The Channeler” is directed by Dr. Bill Doll, professor of theatre and director of University Theatre. The student cast includes Tyler Hastings, Caden Glass, Joey Hancock, Michelle Davis, Lura Cummins and Janae Hatchett.

The production crew includes Magdalena Hogan, stage manager; Collyn Glaspie, Cameron O’Briant and Kala Young, carpenters/electricians; Anthony Jenkins, electrician/board operator; Collyn Glaspie, sound technician; Chloé Casey, wardrobe manager; Gabby Gutierrez, assistant wardrobe manager; and Tessa Handlin and Samantha Lewis, house managers.

Tickets go on sale in the ASU box office on Wednesday, June 18. The ASU box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations and/or ticket information, call 325-942-2000.

Subscriptions for the 2014-15 Arts at ASU season are still available for $30. Subscribers gain free admission to plays and concerts, and pay just $15 for dinner theatres.
