August 18, 2014

Angelo State University’s Civil War Lecture Series, organized by the History Department to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the conflict, will feature eight events during the 2014-15 academic year.

The fourth and final year of the series will begin Sept. 18 with “Abraham Lincoln’s Constitution” by Dr. Brian Dirck of Anderson University in Indiana. Dirck is the author of “Lincoln and Davis: Imagining America, 1809-1865” (2001), “Lincoln the Lawyer” (2007) and “Lincoln and the Constitution” (2012).

The event will coincide with a traveling exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” which will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 18-26 at the C.J. Davidson Center in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont. It will then move to the Dr. Ralph R. Chase West Texas Collection, housed on the second floor of the University Center, and be available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays Sept. 29-Oct. 29.

In addition to constitutional issues, the 2014-15 series will have programs examining the Civil War through the prisms of football, religion, journalism and photography, legal history and civil rights. Dr. Emmett Essin, author of “Shavetails and Bell Sharps: The History of the U.S. Army Mule,” will return to talk about the role of horses after the war, and Dr. Jeff Womack and Kathryn Ostrofsky will present “More Civil War Music.”

All events, unless otherwise noted, will be held at the C.J.
