ASU Honors Student Attending National Naval Conference

April 05, 2010

Angelo State University history major Sarah Smith is attending the 2010 Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference this week in Annapolis, Md.

The theme of this year’s conference is “National Security Beyond the Horizon: Changing Threats in a Changing World.” Each year, select universities are invited to nominate an outstanding undergraduate student to attend the conference to mingle with Navy cadets, discuss significant contemporary issues, share potential solutions to modern dilemmas and hear distinguished diplomatic and political speakers. This is the second consecutive year that ASU has been invited to nominate a student.

A junior from Colorado City, Smith is a member of the ASU Honors Program. At the conference, she will also attend a roundtable discussion on “The End of Suburbia” to explore the changing face of suburbia and how dwindling fuel supplies and the changing environment may affect future community development and social interaction. She has prepared an essay for the roundtable, titled “Media Images of the Suburban Family from World War II to the Present.”

Scheduled speakers at the conference include U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former CIA Director James Woolsey.

Smith’s trip to the conference was made possible through the Alvin and Patricia New Honors Program Enhancement Fund.
