ASU to Host Ceramic Symposium, Workshop

April 08, 2010

Angelo State University will host the 25th annual San Angelo Ceramic Symposium and a ceramic workshop as part of the five-day Ceramic Invitational Exhibition and Symposium, which runs Thursday, April 15, through Sunday, April 19.

The Ceramic Symposium will be held on Friday, April 16, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. The event is open free to the public.

Serving as panelists for the symposium will be invited artist Susan Beiner and juror Sherman Hall. Beiner is a faculty member of the Ceramics Department in Arizona State University’s Herberger College of Fine Arts. Hall is editor of Ceramics Monthly magazine, a post he has held since 2003.

Howard Taylor, director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, will serve as moderator of the symposium, and Esteban Apodaca, ASU associate professor of art in ceramics, will be symposium coordinator.

Artist Vorakit Chinookoswong will conduct the workshop, which is also open free to the public, on April 16 from 9-11 a.m. in the ASU ceramic lab next to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, 1 Love St.

A native of Thailand, Chinookoswong learned his art in Japan before moving to Seabrook, Texas in 1980. He lives a simple “potter’s life,” creating porcelain pieces that strike a balance between aesthetics and function.
