Blose Appointed Provost/Academic VP at Angelo State

April 12, 2010

Dr. Anthony P. Blose, a university administrator with an academic background in physics, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Angelo State University.

ASU President Joseph C. Rallo announced the appointment, effective July 15.

Blose comes to ASU from Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., where he has worked as provost and vice president for academic affairs since 2007. In that position, he served as the university’s chief academic officer and oversaw four regional centers for the university.

Previously, he had served LSSU as dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences and then as founding dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Prior to beginning his tenure at Lake Superior State in 2007, he had worked 16 years at the University of North Alabama (UNA) in a variety of capacities, including chair and professor of the Department of Physics and Earth Science as well as director of the university’s planetarium.

Rallo said, “With his broad academic experience and his strong administrative skills in managing a vibrant academic program with multiple regional centers, Dr. Blose is perfectly suited to meeting ASU’s strategic goals at this point in our history. He understands where we are as an institution, where we want to be and how to get there as an effective member of the Texas Tech University System.”

Blose said, “I am well aware of the strong reputation of Angelo State and enthused to be able to utilize my background and experience to further increase the university’s stature and status. The strong teaching/learning emphasis at Angelo State is extremely important to me since I have been associated throughout my academic career with institutions where those things are highly valued. As a provost, I believe it is my role to advocate for all academics and for the university as a whole.”

ASU’s new provost earned his Bachelor of Science in physics with a minor in mathematics from Manhattan College. He went on to get a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of North Carolina. He did his doctoral dissertation on “Surface Treatments of Silver Halide Thin Films.” After receiving his doctorate, he worked six years on the technical staff of AT&T Bell Laboratories before beginning his academic career at the University of North Alabama.

He started at UNA as an assistant professor of physics in 1991, was promoted to an associate professor in 1998 and earned full professor status in 2005. During his tenure on the physics faculty he taught every physics and astronomy lecture and laboratory course offered by the Department of Physics and Earth Science. He served as departmental chair for nine years. During his UNA tenure, he served as president of the faculty senate as well as on numerous university committees, including the Strategic Planning and Budget Study Committee, which he chaired 2005-06.

He moved from UNA to LSSU in 2007 as a college dean and two years later was appointed to the provost position. As provost he supervised all academic programs and budgets. He was campus leader of the LSSU’s Higher Learning Commission re-accreditation effort in preparing for a self-study beginning this fall. He also led the committee that created and implemented a shared governance structure last fall.

Blose and his wife have two children.
