ASU to Present Inaugural President’s Faculty Excellence Awards

Outstanding faculty in each of Angelo State University’s five academic colleges will be honored at the first-ever Faculty Recognition Dinner on Thursday, May 6, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

During the dinner, ASU President Joseph C. Rallo will present his first President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence in the categories of Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor and Excellence in Leadership/Service.

Twenty-six faculty nominees from the Colleges of Business, Education, Liberal and Fine Arts, Nursing and Allied Health, and Sciences will be recognized with certificates. One winner in each category from each college will receive a $500 award. The overall winner in each category will receive $2,500 as well as a Signature Presidential Recognition Award. The overall winners in the Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor categories will be ASU’s nominees for the Texas Tech University System Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research.

This year’s nominees from the College of Business, by category, are S. Murat Kara, associate professor of economics, Excellence in Teaching; Cody D. Whittington, assistant professor of aerospace studies, Excellence in Teaching; and Sudhir K. Chawla, professor of marketing, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor.

Nominees from the College of Education are Allyn Byars, associate professor of kinesiology, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Susan E. Keith, associate professor of kinesiology, Excellence in Teaching; Kimberly K. Livengood, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, Excellence in Teaching; and Warren K. Simpson, associate professor of kinesiology, Excellence in Leadership/Service.

Nominated from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts are William M. Doll, professor of theatre, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Chris Ellery, professor of English, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Constance L. Kelley, assistant professor of music, Excellence in Teaching; Lana G. Marlow, assistant professor of communication, Excellence in Teaching; William A. Montgomery, professor of psychology, Excellence in Teaching; George Pacheco Jr., assistant professor of communication, Excellence in Leadership/Service; and Guoqiang Zheng, associate professor of history, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor.

College of Nursing and Allied Health nominees are Mona M. Dawson, assistant clinical professor of nursing, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Beverly J. Greenwald, associate professor of nursing, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Carolyn R. Mason, associate professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Leadership/Service; R. Kelly Michael, assistant clinical professor of nursing, Excellence in Teaching; and Shelly D. Weise, associate professor of physical therapy, Excellence in Teaching.

Nominees from the College of Sciences are Loren K. Ammerman, associate professor of biology, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; David L. Bixler, associate professor of physics, Excellence in Teaching; Crosby W. Jones Jr., professor of biology, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Joseph I. Satterfield, associate professor of geology, Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor; Toni D. Sauncy, associate professor of physics, Excellence in Leadership/Service; Paul K. Swets, department head/associate professor of mathematics; Excellence in Leadership/Service; and R. Russell Wilke, associate professor of biology, Excellence in Teaching.

The purpose of the President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence is to recognize outstanding faculty in each of ASU’s five academic colleges for excellence in the three major areas of faculty performance. The awards will be presented annually toward the end of each spring semester. All faculty who have completed at least one full academic year at ASU with satisfactory evaluation are eligible for nomination.
