ASU Prof Grabs National AFROTC Award

April 27, 2010

Dr. John Klingemann, assistant professor of history at Angelo State University, has been selected to participate in the 2010 Air Force ROTC Distinguished Educators Visit and is one of only eight college instructors from the Southwest Region and only 40 nationally to receive the honor this spring.

Klingemann will join the other winners June 10-13 for a visit to Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., for what the Air Force calls the “bluing process” through observation and participation in a variety of Air Force training and activities.

The first day of his visit, Klingemann will get an orientation at the Air University, tour the base’s C-130 aircraft operations and enjoy meals at base dining facilities. The second day will feature a Field Training graduation ceremony and observation of cadets in Field Training on the Leadership Reaction Course. Day two will wrap up with a dinner and briefings with the base commander and command staff.

The main objective of the Distinguished Educator Visit is to show educators that the Air Force is a viable career opportunity for their best students. Participants are selected for the all-expense paid trip from a nomination list compiled by the 24 Air Force recruiting squadrons located around the U.S. Emphasis is placed on finding educators with little or no military experience.

This is the fourth year since 2006 that at least one ASU faculty member has received the Air Force ROTC Distinguished Educator designation. Dr. Crosby Jones, professor of biology, was a 2006 recipient. Dr. Andrew Wallace, head of the Physics Department, was designated in 2007. Dr. Nancy Allen, interim vice president for academic and student affairs, and Dr. Leslie Mayrand, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, were designated in 2009.
