National Award for Grad Education Program

October 08, 2014

Angelo State University’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in guidance and counseling has been selected for a “Students Before Profits Award” by Nonprofit Colleges Online, an organization dedicated to helping prospective students find quality and affordable online academic programs.

One of only two programs at Texas schools selected for the award, ASU’s program ranked first on the list of 44 programs. According to a Nonprofit Colleges Online news release, “The award is given to online colleges and universities with a track record of ‘putting students before profits and education before the bottom line.’ Award-winning programs are profiled and ranked by affordability. However, many of these programs are consistently ranked among the top graduate programs in counseling and psychology by national publications, and we believe they deserve to be considered among the best.”

Dr. John Miazga, dean of the ASU College of Education, said, “Our focus is to provide working students with the opportunity to advance their careers through successful completion of their chosen graduate program. Being recognized for our work to help students afford a program is another factor in our development of high-quality online opportunities. Our faculty are dedicated to providing students the assistance they need to be successful professionals upon graduation. That ASU can help make this affordable is one factor that helps future graduate students choose ASU.”

The only other Texas school on the list is the University of Texas at Tyler, ranked No. 25.

In May, the program was ranked No. 8 nationally by U.S. News for its 2014 edition of Best Online Programs for Veterans.

In July, ASU’s M.Ed. in guidance and counseling was also ranked one of the “10 Best Online Master’s in School Counseling Degree Programs” in the U.S. by TheBestSchools.org, an educational resource website that ranks degree programs in all disciplines.
