Play Honored at State Festival

October 29, 2014

Angelo State University’s recent University Theatre production of “Watson: The Last Great Tale of the Legendary Sherlock Holmes” was named Respondent’s Choice, the highest production honor, at the Texas State Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) in Arlington last week.

“Watson,” directed by Mike Burnett of the ASU theatre faculty, also has been placed into consideration for advancement to the 2015 Kennedy Center Festival for Region VI. ASU, which has had a play selected for the regional level for the past two years in a row, will host the 2015 regional festival in late February. The festival productions will be selected from entries that advance from the region’s six states: Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

In addition, four students were singled out and the entire production ensemble was honored for Meritorious Achievement at the state festival. The students are Josiah Hernandez of San Angelo for stage management, Joey Hancock of Houston for video dramaturgy, Elizabeth Holland of Trenton for lighting design and Caden Glass of Miles for sound design.

Three ASU students have been nominated for the KCACTF’s Irene Ryan Acting Competition at the regional festival: Sean Gibbons of San Angelo for his role as Moriarty, Tyler Hastings of Midland as Watson and Collyn Glaspie of San Angelo in the dual roles of Freud and Queen Victoria.

Started in 1969, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival includes more than 600 academic institutions nationwide participating in eight regional festivals. More information is available online at the Kennedy Center website.
