Fall ‘Discover ASU’ Activities Set for Nov. 12

October 31, 2011

Angelo State University will welcome prospective students and their families to campus on Saturday, Nov. 12, for “Discover ASU,” a daylong program designed to help high school students learn about campus life and educational opportunities at the university.

Activities will begin with check-in at 10 a.m. in the Houston Harte University Center/C.J. Davidson Conference Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. The general welcome session will start at 10:30 a.m. and be followed at 11:15 a.m. by information sessions covering subjects such as succeeding in college, getting involved at ASU, selecting a major and studying abroad, among other topics. Programs to be highlighted during the sessions include ROTC, security studies, the Honors Program, nursing, pre-health professions, pre-veterinary medicine, agriculture, teacher education and computer game development.

Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m., and a department and student organization fair will follow from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Center for Human Performance, 2050 S. Johnson St. During that time, campus tours will be offered every 15 minutes. Later in the afternoon, from 2-4 p.m., residence hall rooms will be available for viewing in Carr Hall, Centennial Village, Plaza Verde, and Robert and Mary Massie halls. Students interested in animal science and agriculture will have the opportunity at 3 p.m. to tour the Management, Instruction and Research (MIR) Center, or ASU Ranch, that includes 6,000 acres of range and farm land, university livestock herds and flocks, a greenhouse and the Food Safety and Product Development Lab.

Discover ASU participants and their guests also are invited on Nov. 12 to attend a number of ASU events for free. Events include the ASU Rams football game against Tarleton State at 2 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium, a security studies immersive learning presentation at 2:45 p.m. in the Global Immersion Center (Planetarium), and the astronomy show “Cosmic Journey” at 3 p.m. in the Planetarium.

For those who cannot attend the Nov. 12 Discover ASU session, two additional dates have been scheduled for the spring semester on Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31.
