ASU Holiday Dinner Theatre to Feature ‘The Foreigner’

November 08, 2011

Angelo State University’s Arts at ASU program will present the award-winning comedy “The Foreigner” for its 2011 Holiday Dinner Theatre Nov. 17-20 and Dec. 1-3 in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 17-19 and Dec. 1-3 with dinner served each night at 7 p.m. A matinee performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, with dinner served at 1 p.m. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Written by Larry Shue, “The Foreigner” won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards. The ASU production is being directed by Mike Burnett, ASU assistant professor of theatre/assistant director of the University Theatre.

“The play is a fun look at the lives of some folks in rural Georgia,” Burnett said. “The premise of the play centers around communication, as the main character of the play (Charlie) is a ‘foreigner’ and pretends to not speak English. There is a lot of comedy involved as Charlie learns some deep secrets of the other characters while learning the English language.”

The play features ASU students Brent Davidson as Charlie, Brian Carter as Sgt. “Froggy” LeSueur, Brooke Addison as Betty Meeks, Brandon Jones as Rev. David Marshall Lee, Jordon Shocklee as Catherine Simms, Lance Turner as Owen Musser and Sterling Townsend as Ellard Simms. The understudies are Jacob Scott and Nicole McDonald.

Burnett is scenic designer, Matt Smith is lighting designer and costume designer is Eldra Sanford. Stage manager is Jacqueline Stewart, and Ashleigh Clouser is assistant stage manager. Also in the crew are Leigha Murray, box office manager; Amanda Mitchell, house manager; Tiana Sefcik, assistant scenic designer and master carpenter; Jennifer Crump, master electrician; Marshall Van Pelt, sound technician; Josiah Hernandez, properties manager; Hallie Behrens, assistant props manager; and Suzanne Smith, wardrobe manager.

Tickets are $12.50 for ASU students and activity card holders, $15 for non-ASU students and Arts at ASU subscribers, and $20 general admission. Reservations should be made at least three days before the desired performance by calling 942-2000 weekdays between 2-6 p.m.
