Springfest Blossoms

March 20, 2015

Angelo State University celebrates the season with its annual Springfest, three days of music, comedy, food and outdoor activities to bring the campus and community together.

Springfest 2015 will take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 25-27, at various campus locations. The kickoff event will be the Club Café appearance by Tanisha Long and Esther Ku of MTV’s “Girl Code” comedy series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with admission prices of $2 for ASU students and $5 for the general public at the door.

On Thursday, students will get an opportunity to go out in the community to make a difference through Project Angelo, which last year drew the participation of 150 students.

The event is close to the heart of one of its organizers, Caitlyn Crumrine, a senior from New Braunfels.

“My goal is to hopefully surpass last year’s number,” Crumrine said. “Our goal is to get the students involved and for them to see what the community has to offer them. It’s also an opportunity to meet many different people, people with different backgrounds, from ASU. I just like meeting new people and seeing what people are involved with on campus.”

This year’s participating community organizations include House of Faith, the Nature Center, Meals for the Elderly, Recycle a Bike, Rust Street Ministries and more.

On Friday, activities move to the Pavilion and the Campus Green. A top attraction will be a tethered hot air balloon, which will give riders a bird’s-eye view of the campus. The balloon, games and other activities, sponsored by the University Center Program Council, will take place from 3-9 p.m.

At 6 p.m. Friday, the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity will host its fifth annual Crawfish Boil outside the Food Service Center, 2201 Vanderventer, while Chartwells Food Services will offer up a fish fry meal option.

Also at 6 p.m., the Sunset Concert, featuring Texas country music, is set to begin.

Vanessa Vasquez, a senior from Eagle Pass and a member of the UCPC, says the programming is “by students, for students.”

“We felt that students were more inclined to that Texas country music style,” she said. “It’s really about catering to the students and seeing how they react.”

For Samuel Mendoza of ASU’s Center for Student Involvement, the Sunset Concert is a highlight of Springfest.

“The Sunset Concert is going on its fourth year,” he said, “and we do a lot to make sure we get the best talent available. We’re going back to Texas country music because it’s always a crowd favorite, both on campus and in San Angelo.”

“The Sunset Concert is family friendly,” he added, “with no alcohol. Participants can bring their blanket, hang out, do a little dancing and still be home before too late.”

Participants invited to the Very Important Organizations (VIO) Tent will get a great view of the concert, said Liz Guzman, a senior from Austin.

“We choose about 10 student organizations to be VIOs for Springfest,” she said, “based on their participation on campus throughout the year, such as attending sports, the President’s Roundtable or Center for Student Involvement events. The VIOs will be in a special tent with tables and chairs, a concert view and goodie box. In the past, some have brought their grills and served up food for others while they were being honored. It’s just a nice way to say thank you for all you do for us.

Blake Pitchford, a junior from Leawood, Kan., has been working hard to make the VIO Tent special.

“I want them, the student organization members, to know that the work they are doing throughout the year is getting recognized,” he said. “We want them to know that they are appreciated for making ASU a better place.”

But whether a member of a Very Important Organization or not, Springfest is designed as a celebration for all Angelo State students and community supporters.

“We’re hoping students get to enjoy being students,” Vasquez said.
