August 20, 2015

Angelo State University’s Computer Science Department has added a new Web and Mobile Development Certificate program that will be available to students starting this fall.

Responsive Design Apps

The curriculum for the program consists of four courses:

Students completing the program will be certified Web and mobile application (app) developers, and the certification will appear on their permanent ASU transcripts. The certificate program is recommended for computer science majors and minors who plan to enter the mobile application development industry. It is open to all ASU students, regardless of major, but students majoring in disciplines other than computer science will have to pass several prerequisite courses to be eligible.

One of the courses, Web Programming, is also new this year.

Dr. Rob LeGrand Dr. Rob LeGrand Dr. Rob LeGrand, associate professor of computer science, said, “Web Programming will cover the use of Web standards – JavaScript, HTML and CSS – to create dynamic websites and mobile apps that work on any device or modern browser. Employers have been asking us for students with these skills, and we hope to create more mobile-centric courses in the future.”

According to a recent survey by the Gartner Inc. information technology research company, “By the end of 2017, market demand for mobile app development services will grow at least five times faster than internal IT organizations’ capacity to deliver them” and “mobile phone sales will reach 2.1 billion units by 2019, which will fuel demand for mobile enterprise apps that meet the high performance and usability of consumer apps.”

In another recent report, Cathal McGloin, vice president of Red Hat Mobile Platforms, said, “As organizations move to become more mobile-centric, many are expected to continue expanding their mobile development teams and explore how those teams can work more collaboratively to bring apps to market faster.”

ASU’s new certificate program will give graduates an additional credential to demonstrate specialized experience to potential employers.
