Arturo Valdez is the Director of Bands at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Mr. Valdez is the director of the Angelo State University Golden Ram Marching Band and conducts the ASU Wind Ensemble.  Mr. Valdez also supervises all of the Athletic, Symphonic and Concert Bands at Angelo State University.

The appointment as Director of Bands at Angelo State University follows a distinguished 26 career as a Texas Music Educator.  Mr. Valdez has a broad educational and leadership experience including Associate Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Music Education at Texas Christian University, Director of Instrumental Music with the Fort Worth Independent School District, Director of Visual and Performing Arts with the La Joya Independent School District, Executive Director of Fine Arts with the Donna Independent School, and Director of Bands in Laredo ISD, Jim Hogg County ISD, La Porte ISD, and Donna ISD.

His broad knowledge of wind music, teaching pedagogies, and motivational techniques, enabled his concert and marching ensembles to become consistent award winners in numerous music festivals, Texas Music Educators Association and UIL events. During his tenure as Director of Bands, his high school band programs earned consistent University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes Awards, performed at the UIL State Marching Contest ten times, and performed in the UIL State Marching Finals five times.  His bands have earned the distinction of winning a Class 5A State Marching Band Championship with the Laredo J. W. Nixon High School Band, and a Class 5A State Wind Ensemble Contest with the La Porte High School Band. He served as conductor of the Rio Grande Valley Wind Symphony for five years. During his tenure the Rio Grande Valley Wind Symphony had consistent sellouts of over 1500 in attendance at each of the five annual concerts.

Mr. Valdez has taught at every level including elementary band during his first year teaching.  He has taught middle school and high school bands throughout his teaching career and ultimately most recently supervised student teachers and taught the “Effective Instructional Strategies and Pedagogy” classes to music majors at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. 

Arturo Valdez is an active clinician, adjudicator, and professional development presenter. Mr. Valdez has been appointed to serve in numerous State UIL committees including one that was charged with reforming the U.I.L. Area and State Marching Band competitions.  He served in the UIL Superintendent’s Music Advisory Committee 2000 – 2005. He also served in a grant reviewing committee for the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C.   Mr. Valdez is Past-President of the Texas Bandmasters Association and served seven terms on the Texas Bandmasters Association State Board of Directors.  Over the last 30 years, Mr. Valdez has presented numerous clinics, workshops and professional development sessions for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention/Clinic, Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, and numerous school districts in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.  He has served as adjudicator of UIL music competitions and has judged the TMEA State Honor Band competitions, UIL State Marching Contests and the TMEA All-State student auditions numerous times.  He has judged the Arizona State Band Concert Contest several times and conducted the New Mexico All-State Band during their annual New Mexico Music Educators Association State Convention.
