Nursing Experience:
Dr. Gabbert has over 30 years of experience in acute care settings as an adult and pediatric emergency department/transport nurse, manager and educator, along with over 10 years experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner. She has used her wealth of experience and expertise in curriculum and instructional design in a variety of classroom and distance learning formats in her faculty and administrative roles as associate professor, coordinator for pediatric nurse practitioner studies, faculty in the nurse practitioner studies and doctorate of nursing graduate programs in Lubbock and as Senior Associate Academic Dean, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, SON in El Paso, Texas.

Primary Teaching Specialties: Dr. Gabbert is proud to have had the opportunity to teach students at every level of RN nursing in a wide variety of courses. Care of the pediatric patient and family, Health assessment along with family and community care in rural areas with limited access to health care and vulnerable populations issues are particularly challenging issues, ever-changing and specialty topics that Dr. Gabbert particularly enjoys teaching.

Recent/Current Projects and Research Interests:
Examples of some of Dr. Gabbert’s Projects and Research include: Dr. Gabbert was appointed to the Texas State School Health Advisory Committee and the Continuing Education Committee of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in 2010 and continues to be an active member of both state and national committees. 

Dr. Gabbert’s projects and accomplishments include over 40 publications, numerous presentations to both lay and professional local, state, national and international audiences and her awards include: The Jean Watson Scholar Award by the International Association of Human Caring (2006), the Outstanding Faculty Award for the Graduate School of Nursing from the Student Senate (TTUHSC, 2009), and the TTUHSC and the Faculty Development Award for Best Distance Learning, TTUHSC (2010).
Research - Key Personnel: Transformation Para Salud: A Community Based Participatory Research Approach Addressing Childhood Obesity Prevention and Control in West Texas Transformation Para Salud:  A Community Based Participatory Research Approach Addressing childhood Obesity Prevention and Control In West Texas. This project was supported by the National Research Initiative of the USDA State Research, education and extension Service, Grant Number 2006-55215-16691, Gabbert, W. L. (2008-2011).
