About Kristi

What are some of your favorite things to do in San Angelo?

San Angelo has a lot of outdoor activities. I love walking the path by the Concho River or going out to Lake Nasworthy. San Angelo also has a lot of great local art that can be found downtown or at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

Why did you decide to attend Angelo State?

I decided to come here because ASU was affordable and had small class sizes. I decided to stay here because I felt at home on campus. Professors were so encouraging and accessible. I never felt like I was just a number here.

Favorite place on campus?

There are a lot of great spots on campus, but my favorite is the University Center. There is a lot to do inside, like watch TV on one of the new flat screen TVs, play pool or ping pong, or look around in the book store. There are also some great outside seating areas.

What is your favorite ASU fact?

We have a beautiful campus and one of my favorite spots is the Memorial Oak Grove that is at the northeast corner of campus. In November 1949, when ASU was still known as San Angelo College, students wanted to honor former students who were lost in World War II. Students and members of the community dedicated a plaque and planted 29 oak trees in their honor. Each November on Veteran’s Day, cadets from Air Force ROTC hold an all-night vigil to remember those fallen students and others who have fought for their country.

What do you like about being an admissions counselor?

I love meeting students and their families from all over the state. Applying to college can be overwhelming. I like being able to guide students and their families through the process and making them feel more at ease with the whole college experience.

What advice would you give a student about choosing a university?

Choose a school that makes YOU happy. Think about whether you would like to go to a big or a small school, what programs the schools offer, and financial aid and scholarships. Visit the schools you are interested in, because you can get a much better feel when you are actually on a campus. If you can’t visit, go to that school’s Web site and get on its mailing list. And call and speak to a rep – that’s what we’re here for.

What advice would you give a student about succeeding in college?

Go in remembering that college is different from high school. You will most likely spend a lot more time studying here than you did in high school. Learn to manage your time and GO TO CLASS.
