Why did you choose ASU?
I chose ASU as a transfer student because I have always felt that Angelo State has the perfect sized enrollment. After attending a much larger university, I really appreciate smaller classes that are more interactive between teachers and students. Also, ASU has great facilities that help with schoolwork, such as computer labs. Leisure time is also made easier with an active intramural sports program and recreation center.  Angelo State is affordable and San Angelo can be a great place to live for a college student.

What activities are you involved with?
I play intramural sports: tennis, volleyball, basketball and softball. I’m also involved with the History Club and I attend ASU basketball and football games and other sporting events. In addition, I participate in ASU lake trips.

Which programs and services at ASU have you used?
ASU has a large student center with great food options, ping-pong tables and a lot of televisions to enjoy between classes. The Junell Center is an incredible complex to watch sporting events in, the recreational center has racquetball courts, many basketball courts and a weight room, and there are many other athletic complexes scattered throughout the campus. Also, the Porter Henderson Library makes research and studying much easier with its large computer lab and private places to study.

What advice do you have for new students?
My advice would be to live on campus for your first couple of years and get involved in as many school-related events as possible. Getting involved with sports or academic programs is a great way to meet new friends and prepare for life after college. Also, make sure you follow your degree plan and write down all of your required classes on a piece of paper, checking them off the list after completion. By having a list of remaining classes, it may inspire you to study hard and be more organized. But most importantly, GO TO CLASS!

Why did you choose ASU?
I chose to come to ASU because I considered it a great stepping stone to my grad school of choice. I want to go to Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas when I graduate ASU. Coming from a relatively smaller town, there was no way I was ready to move to Dallas and be on my own at 18. Angelo State is small enough to give you a sense of comfort, but big enough to allow you to gain your independence.

What activities are you involved with?
I am involved with activities primarily related to new students and alumni. I am a student worker in the Admissions Office and participate in Discover ASU days by giving campus tours and assisting new students. I am also a RAMbassador, so I give more campus tours, volunteer in community service projects and help out at many of the ASU functions, like Ram Jam and the Wells Fargo Homecoming Dinner.

Which programs and services at ASU have you used?
I have participated in the volleyball intramural program, gone to numerous UCPC Club Café nights and some of the Residential Programs events, like Red Dirt Round Up. I also love going to the free ASU sporting events – basketball is my favorite. Academically, I have been to several Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions for tutoring and have visited professors during their office hours when I needed additional help.

What advice do you have for new students?
Get involved! College is not just a place to learn a million new facts that you may think you will never use. There are so many wonderful things to do here on campus that give you a chance to really branch out and discover who you truly are.

Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology (Pre-med)

Why did you choose ASU?
I chose ASU because it is close to home and it has scholarship opportunities. I also liked the study abroad program and the fact that there is a high acceptance rate into medical school for ASU grads.

What activities are you involved with?
I am president of the Bass Anglers at ASU and a member of Tri-Beta, the biology honor society. I also participate in intramurals and am a RAMbassador, which means I help with some ASU events.

Which programs and services at ASU have you used?
I am a member of the Honors Program and the Student Worker program. I also plan to use the study abroad program. I have also been to many events hosted by the UCPC to get to know more people on campus.

What advice do you have for new students?
College will be the best experience of your life, as long as you maintain balance. Achieving the proper balance between academics and life outside of your text books will reward you with success and a stress-free lifestyle.

Jennifer PrichardJennifer Prichard

Year:  Graduate student

Why did you choose ASU?  I chose ASU because of its numerous scholarship opportunities and its comparatively low cost.

What activities are you involved with?  I am a member of Phi Alpha Theta (history honor society) and the Russian Club.

Which programs and services at ASU have you used?
As a commuter student, the commuter meal plan has really come in handy.  I also frequently use the CHP (Center for Human Performance) to play basketball and racquetball and I love to play intramural sports.

What advice do you have for new students?
Break out of your comfort zone, try things you never thought you would try, study abroad and make the most of your time at ASU.  Never again will you have this much time to figure out who you are.
