Public Drawing Hunts
Trophy Whitetail, Turkey and Javelina Hunting at an Affordable Price
Angelo State University provides hunting opportunities for the public through annual public drawings. Three public drawing hunts are conducted each year. The first two hunts allow hunters to harvest 1 buck, 1 doe, and 2 turkeys for $1,000. The third hunt allows hunters to harvest 3 does for $300. “Cull bucks” may also be harvested in the third hunt but only after receiving guide approval.
The deer herd on the ASU MIR Center has been intensively managed for quality white-tailed bucks for 20+ years. Our philosophy is based on cost-effective white-tailed deer herd management. This involves manipulating (1) deer density, (2) buck-doe ratios, and (3) selective harvesting. The property is not high-fenced, and we do not feed deer on a year-round basis. We have found that through managing our deer herd population and improving habitat quality, we are able to produce exceptional-quality white-tailed bucks without the cost of high-fencing and intensive feeding.
We maintain a deer density of 1 deer to 15-20 acres and a buck doe ratio of 1 buck for every 1.5 doe. Brush control, range reseeding, and prescribed burning are used on an annual basis to improve habitat quality.
Automatic deer feeders and food plots are used during hunting season to improve hunter success.
