A variety of community development strategies exist. The following links provide resources to help develop innovative approaches to healthier communities and improve the lives of community members.
Center for Democracy and Citizenship
The CDC develops citizenship initiatives around the concept of public work. As a part of the University of Minnesota and the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, the CDC draws on a rich heritage of people and institutions doing public work to achieve things of lasting importance.
Civic Practices Network
CPN is a collaborative, nonpartisan project working to empower families and develop community capacities for solving problems in a diverse and complex society undergoing rapid change.
Government Innovators Network
The Government Innovators Network strives to use news, documents, descriptions of award-winning innovative programs and events to stimulate new ideas and bring people and ideas together around innovations in governance.
Texas Health Institute
The Texas Health Institute is a think-tank that provides innovative, collaboratively developed options to improve the health of Texans and their communities through education, research and health policy development.
Outcome Indicators Project
The Outcome Indicators Project is a joint project between the Urban Institute and The Center for What Works. The project provides a framework for tracking nonprofit performance by using outcome and performance indicators to assist nonprofit organizations seeking to develop new outcome monitoring processes or improve existing ones.
The Urban Institute-Nonprofits
The nonprofit Web page of the Urban Institute provides information about advocacy, charity, community and faith-based organizations along with publications on foundations and philanthropy.
Community-Wealth.org
Community-Wealth brings together information about the broad range of community wealth-building activities. Community-Wealth.org gives access to a community-building toolbox that includes manuals and “how to” resources that are organized by wealth-building strategy.
Local Initiatives Support Corporation
The LISC Online Resource Library offers a collection of downloadable publications, like the LISC monthly eNewsletter, policy briefs, in-depth papers, case studies and best practices. LISC provides these resources to help resident-led, community-based development organizations change distressed neighborhoods and communities into healthy ones.
Texas Association of Community Development Corporations
TACDC is a trade association made up of over 150 members spanning the state and reflecting Texas’ diversity and geography. TACDC seeks to improve the lives of low-to-moderate income Texans by strengthening the capacity of community development organizations as well as advocating for supportive environments on behalf of those that create and preserve homes, jobs, small businesses and other community assets.
Center for Public Policy Priorities
The CPPP focuses on evaluating public policy as it affects low-and moderate-income Texans. The Center’s timely, accessible and credible research informs policy makers, the press, and the general public so that public policy and private practices may better the economic and social conditions of low-and moderate-income Texans.
San Angelo Development Review Committee
The Development Review Committee, or DRC, provides residents an opportunity to meet with members of the development community and discuss development issues related to current plans or those under consideration. Membership includes individuals from the city’s Planning, Engineering Services, Permits & Inspections, Fire Prevention, and Water departments. The group meets every Friday morning, from 9 am to 12pm at San Angelo City Hall.
