Graduate Certification Procedures

Initial Certification

Texas Teacher Certification

To earn teacher certification, the candidate must meet the following requirements:

  1. Pass the Content TExES exam in the content/subject area in which you are seeking teaching certification. The teacher certification candidate must pass this test prior to Clinical Teaching or Internship. Typically, a candidate should take a TExES based on their completed coursework.
  2. Pass the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities TExES (PPR) exam. Candidates will be given approval to take the PPR during Clinical Teaching or Internship.
  3. Complete Clinical Teaching (one semester) or an Internship (two semesters).
  4. Submit a Field Experience Log documenting a minimum of 30 clock-hours of observations for initial certification.
  5. Complete all certification coursework listed on Angelo State’s Initial Teacher Certification Plan.
  6. Complete the TEA fingerprinting process.
  7. Apply and Pay for Texas Teacher certification through the Texas Education Agency.

Advanced Certifications

Texas School Counselor Certification

To earn Texas School Counselor Certification, the candidate must meet the following requirements:

  1. Hold a master’s degree from an institution of higher education that is accredited by an accrediting agency, as recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  2. Have two years of classroom teaching experience in a public or accredited private school.
  3. Complete all certification coursework listed on Angelo State’s School Counselor Degree/Certification Plan.
  4. Complete a Practicum or an Internship.
  5. Pass the School Counselor TExES exam.
  6. Apply and pay for School Counselor certification through the Texas Education Agency.

Texas Principal Certification

  1. Hold a master’s degree from an institution of higher education that is accredited by an accrediting agency, as recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  2. Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate.
  3. Have two years of classroom teaching experience in a public or accredited private school.
  4. Complete all certification coursework listed on Angelo State’s Principal Degree/Certification Plan.
  5. Complete a Practicum or an Internship.
  6. Pass the Principal TExES exam.
  7. Apply and pay for Principal certification through the Texas Education Agency.

Texas Superintendent Certificate

  1. Hold a master’s degree from an institution of higher education that is accredited by an accrediting agency, as recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  2. Hold a Principal certificate or the equivalent issued by TEA.
  3. Complete all certification coursework listed on Angelo State’s Superintendent Certification Plan.
  4. Complete a Practicum.
  5. Pass the Superintendent TExES exam.
  6. Apply and pay for Superintendent certification through the Texas Education Agency.
