Germany (International Education) 2010
Introduction
The 2010 study abroad program to Germany in international education will provide professional growth opportunities for teachers and prospective teachers. This is an opportunity for the participants to:
- Visit a country that practices a different style of public education.
- Study the organization and administration of the educational system of Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, and compare it with the educational system in San Angelo, Texas.
- Directly study the teaching practices and student services provided in the schools of Lüneburg and compare these with the teaching practices and student services provided in the schools of San Angelo.
The program is being offered as a component of the student and faculty exchange program between ASU and Leuphana University that was established in March 1991 and initiated with the exchange of teacher education students in 1993 and 1994. This agreement was revised and extended in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.
Students in the program will enroll in two courses and earn six semester credit hours upon successful completion of the program.

Courses
Students in the program are expected to register for two courses and can earn six semester credit hours upon successful completion of the program. In terms of content, student-faculty contact hours and requirements, these courses are equivalent to courses taught on campus at ASU. Additional inquiries about the courses and their applicability to individual degree plans should be directed to Dr. Ann Bullion-Mears and Dr. Donna Gee.
EDU 3381/6381: Special Topics - A Study of the Education System in Texas.
This course will include three major components: (a) an overview of the structure and administration of the school system of Texas; (b) a detailed study of teaching practices and student services in the elementary and secondary schools of San Angelo and surrounding districts; and (c) an overview of the structure and administration of the school systems of Lower Saxony, Germany.
EDU 3381/6381: Special Topics - A Comparative Analysis of School Practices in Germany and Texas. This course will involve a comparative study of the school practices in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, and in San Angelo, Texas, with major emphasis on the comparison of teaching practices and student services observed in the Lüneburg schools with those in San Angelo. Field experiences will include classroom visitations, observations and discussions in seminar settings with headmasters, teachers and students in the various types of primary, secondary and post-secondary institutions in Germany, both public and private, and lectures by faculty of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg.
Travel Arrangements
Students will be extensively briefed regarding travel arrangements prior to departure, and schedules with addresses and telephone numbers given to each participant. All travel arrangements will be made by the program directors and approved by the university.
All program participants must have adequate health and accident insurance coverage in case of emergencies or other needed medical care. Students will be required to obtain International Student Identification Cards that will provide medical, death and discount benefits. Participants must provide the directors with a copy of the policy number and company name of their insurance policy.
Student Eligibility
Undergraduate Students:
- Must be a full-time ASU student for two consecutive semesters at time of application
- Must have completed 30 hours of course work at time of application
- Must have cumulative GPA of 2.75
Graduate Students:
- Current students must have GPA of 3.0
- Newly accepted student must have undergraduate GPA of 2.75
- Transfer students must have GPA of 3.0
