Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education prepares students for rewarding careers in primary, elementary and middle school education. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and skills that will allow you to make a positive impact on the lives of your future students. You may recall a teacher who made a difference in your life. That is the type of teachers we strive to produce. In addition to our bachelor’s degree programs in teacher education, we offer several master’s degrees for those who wish to further their professional careers.

Passionate Faculty

Full-time faculty in the Department of Teacher Education hold doctorates and are experienced educators. They stay current in their areas of expertise, are active in grant-funded programs and research, and provide professional development opportunities for area and regional schools and teachers. They care deeply about our teacher education students and develop lasting relationships with them beyond graduation.

Strong Job Outlook

Students in our department have a consistently high pass rate on state teacher certification exams. Job placement for our graduates is also favorable, and the U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment opportunities for teachers are expected to increase over the next few years.

Real-World Experience

Teacher education students spend time in real classroom settings, even prior to student teaching. Then, during their student teaching practicum, a significant amount of their time is spent in actual classrooms with real-world responsibilities. They are guided and mentored by experienced classroom teachers and university supervisors. Our students gain valuable experience teaching in front of a class, creating and delivering lessons plans and demonstrating their skills with technology and multimedia presentations.

Technology Emphasis

Our department has access to the New Innovative Teaching Center, a classroom with state-of-the-art teaching and learning technology. Additionally, each classroom used for teacher preparation courses has multimedia technology that exposes students to the tools that they need to effectively teach and communicate with today’s pupils.
